January 2013
March 2013
-Introductions: Teri, Gene, Stu, Bob D., Steve, Phil, Linda, Jessica, Leslie C.
-2013 Goals (posted on website) includes good projects for mid-week work crews. Jessica will send out an email and we can reply to it, if we’re interested in being on the email list for mid-week workdays.
–Building:
–Widen and clear Crozet Park trail — THIS SATURDAY we’ll start at 9am … meet at the shelter.
–Upper loop at Mint Springs? Dan is moving on this. (See under workdays below.)
–Map out / clear the potential 5k route: Need permission from one more owner to north of Licking Hole Creek if easements aren’t in place by October. Also need the bridge north of WestHall by October. Even better if we knew all this was in progress between now and May so we can show people / advertise it at May’s Arts and Crafts Festival.
–Sugar Hollow is a mess since the storms. Chain saw needed… Not an official CTC workday.
–Planning:
–Bridge North of West Hall… Dan is moving forward on this. See above.
–Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival May 11-12. We will have a booth… 2 days for hours… Teams of 2 for 3-hour shifts. Laminated map, t-shirts, etc + WHAT ELSE? Send Jessica ideas. Small TV or large computer monitor and do a PPt of CTC pictures. Print smaller maps for people to take… We need to re-work our maps
–Trees at park need more mulch. Looking good. May be a mulch pile there that we can access. Put out feelers for free mulch, or Phil can use Karl’s truck and pick up $10 worth at Yancey Mills. Maybe for March 30.
–Other:
–Kiosk at park– scout is moving forward and he has taken pictures of the one at Mint Springs. He needs to take the lead, but we are willing to help if he asks. Jessica will email him and suggest May 1 as a date we can put him on our agenda to help him, see if he got approval from troop and fundraising, tell him when the next park board meeting.
CTC members left at 6:45 for CCA meeting + town hall meeting.
Next workdays: Sat 3/16; Sat 3/30; Sat 4/06 (Byrom); Sat 4/20
3/30 could be for Mint Springs, if mid-week crew flags it first with Dan. April could be good for finishing the park trail. Or Joseph Taylor bridge.
Next meeting: Thursday, April 11, 2013.
Note: We need to talk about maps.
Minutes from July Meeting
April minutes
-Introductions: Jessica M., Linda M., Nan C., Scott H., John A., Jim H., Dan J., Bob D., Gene, Beth H.
–Action Item updates
– Dan Mahon to GPS route around Old Trail, flag a path near pond (rough clearing?) and ask the developers for approval/input. Put on hold as things are worked out with easements.
– Dan M. to alert Josh Davis (ALb Co Schools) about trail work behind Henley. He did this. CTC can work on it as long as Dan gives his OK.
– Bob /Dan set up meeting with David Hilliard re: Old Trail connections to the Lodge. Met yesterday evening and brainstormed re: trails for Lodge residents to use, etc. Bob will lead this coordination w/ OT. “Dirt Shoes” walk-through April 22nd; for more information, email dombrowerj@aol.com.
– Dan to give Jessica (and the CTC in general) some bridge designs for the Joseph Taylor Bridge. We know where we’ll build it (future Crozet connector trail behind Western Ridge). Crozet Trails Day provided funds for
materials. Dan’s footbridge design for a fiber glass bridge kit would work, but too expensive. We can come up with a cheaper design; which might still come form Dan, or from us. We will go back out there and take measurements and photos before determining a design.
– Tom send memo to Western Ridge board and follow-up on bridge project. Plank bridge which will connect the Western Ridge residents to the connector trail. WR will provide funds. CTC will build it, with a bollard (to prevent 4-wheelers from crossing it but allowing mowers to come across it when necessary). If we build this bridge, the county has agreed to mow a perimeter area around that. Still waiting for WR board approval and funds.
–Building:
– Mint Springs upper upper loop- when do we want to have the next workday? Dan M. is keen on continuing with this; he needs to GPS it w/ another P&R member(Tucker), and knows this is time-sensitive before heavy vegetation comes in.
– Old Trail re-route: (1) By the bridges: We’ve done the part towards the area behind Henley out of the creek bed. The old trail remains a nature trail and by-pass the creek and school sections. (2) By the pond: Dan will follow up w/ the developer before we proceed. (3) By the Creek: Same as # (2). (4) By the Park: We’d like to do something that sits above the wet area near the pond, plus ties in w/ the retirement lodge. This will need to be done by Co park machinery etc.
– Western Ridge bridge (Tom/Dan) See above.
– Joseph Taylor bridge See above.
–Planning:
– Stonehouse development (SD)? We’ve been talking for a while to get an interim agreement from SD to build trail. Found out we don’t need a survey since we could partner up w/ Rivanna Water Authority. But don’t need to even do that now cuz SD is surveying it for development, so we can tie in w/ theirs. Once we have that easement, we can then declare that a public trail and have a Crozet connector trail as a neighborhood amenity. Da needs to be informed that the trail we already use will not be used for future development. Jim will email a copy of his developers’ map to Jessica so she can ensure that Dan has it, to check for our trail allowance and the developers’ original agreement.
– WestHall trail building? Agreement from developer for rough grading of the trail; plus we need to build the bridge ($3000 from WH residents for this). Need to go out there again to see what materials, etc is needed. Maybe we could use some of these funds for the JT bridge too. Still working this out. We need the Corey Farm HOA easement, and are making good headway with that, last meeting went very well, they are interested in us doing this. It’ll go through Liberty Hall.
– – April 14th trail design mini-charette / charette means a workshop brainstorming session to examine and design around a rock outcrop. Meeting near MJ Hospital; breakfast provided; walk to Old Mills Trail (really wonderful system, on the county side of the Rivanna River). Go to <www.crozettrailscrew.org> if interested.
– – Jarman’s Gap road tree-planting/ Crozet Trails Day 2012 This year = 5 K race and tree-planting. VDOT putting in sidewalk. We’re working w/ them to get permission to put in more trees. Lion’s Club already in on this, plus Jessica. Meeting on Tuesday, April 24th re: more design and phasing of planting–you’re welcome to come. CTDay we’ll already have the trees and plan for where they go. Booths can be along the sidewalk while we plant trees. Jessica will spearhead the trees piece. Scott and Janet will do 5K race with Bad to the Bone. Think about how you’d like to be involved. CTDay = October 20th.
Other:
– July 4th celebration (on Saturday, June 30th)—CTC to march and then sell water and soft drinks. Will talk more about this in May and June. We’ll put together a fact sheet for telling the public about the trails.
– Scott to talk about involvement in the Center for Nonprofit Excellence An association in area, and Crozet Parks is our parent org and they’re members in this. So we can attend certain events and offer info about CTC. Scott will represent CTC. Jessica will give Scott business cards, flyers. Nan is attending a workshop on non-profits and will bring us back some info.
– Mower / trimmer (Bob) Bob has worked out with SEAR’s to get this for FREE!! (≠$400) – Bob will store it at his home and maintain it for now. How exciting!
– CTDay 2012- Scott and Janet—Race committee; Jessica, Phil, and Sandy—Tree committee. (See more above.)Booths? Donations? Volunteers?
Next workday: Design Workshop this coming Saturday, the 14th. April 28th– volunteer for 5k race at OT; then walk to JT bridge location to take measurements etc; maybe use the new mower—start at 10:30.
Next Meeting: May 10th
Adjourned at 7:27PM
Minutes from March meeting
-Building: – Mint Springs upper upper loop Next step is to get a definitive route that ends at the rock outcrop. The northern route could go to the fire road and continue, but it’s pretty steep. The South route down was good. Do we re-route and make all new alignments? Can we use the fire road? Yes, as long as we stay on Alb Co property and it gets complicated at times. Dan with GPS or CTC do more. Tucker would join in the next time. A Field Sch (FS) student wants to do some work but only during the week. Is there someone who can do that? Dan said there’s a plan to do work projects during Spring Break. Jessica will tell FS about this. Next action = finalize route; join Dan again, and make it to the rock. Morning event for 3 hours with break at top for packed lunch. Poison ivy and snakes come in soon, so let’s do it ASAP. – Old Trail re-route (4 areas: by the bridges, by the pond, by the Creek, and by the Park) Walked last Sunday and found 4 places that need re-routing. One or 2 we could do by ourselves (Dan will GPS a rough clearing and flag it to ask OT owners for an adjustment), but the others need to let OT know and possibly use heavy equipment. Open space could possibly be enlarged .What they initially gave us is pretty tight and pushes public access right up against private property and/or in wetlands and hill. Bob spoke with Davis G. re: trail from back of retirement home to garden etc. Dan M. If we could get the buy-in from a garden club or someone to put in a therapeutic garden, Dan is trained in that. The pond that is at the end of a steep hill and might be good for a respite w/ benches and a short walk down and out, but not tied in as an integral part of the whole trail. Can we use the existing boundary of an easement already given to Rivanna Water Authority. Property owner would still have to sign off on this. These are steps that Dan must initiate, but if the voice of the community via CTC follows, that’d be very helpful. That way the board sees that no new funds need to be used to keep it up. Josh Davis said to Jessica that CTC could do whatever we determine necessary on the school property, as long as Dan M approves it. He wants us to let schools know just the same. Next workday = Saturday, March 24th to reroute trailhead at OT Drive and section between there and the Lindy Bane Bridge. Dan will send Josh Davis notice of this plan. – Western Ridge bridge (Tom/Dan) Tom is waiting on a confirmation of price of bollard. Tom doesn’t need to wait on word from Dan M. re: OK on price (should cost less than $300) and should connect on the deck. Jessica will send Tom an email and let him know he can go ahead to the board; then we’ll develop items list / purchases; then organize a trail workday and invite the Western Ridge community to join us—one day project. Then want to create the connection from WR to Parkside Village and to the new library. – Byrom workdays April and May, and we’ll avoid CTC workdays on same dates. Phil was impressed by how much the County had done out there. Dan attributes that to the need to accommodate horse trailers. Same at Preddy creek.
-Planning: – Joseph Taylor bridge How big? How high? If keep it low profile don’t need handrails etc. Flood waters will just go over it; then reside. Cables can tether it in place. Materials for under $1000. Span = 17 feet to take up onto banks. Building head walls would bring it to 16 feet. Plaque can go on wood section. Dan has designs that he thinks would work that already have had blanket approval from Brd of Supervisors as long as the Co. engineer approves it. We’ll advertise its building in The Gazette—summer break. Dedicate at Trail Day next Fall? Crib walls on each side and a simple plank bridge. ACo budget might cover a rough grading between West Hall and Lickinghole Basin. Also signs and kiosks, esp at schools so that it looks managed and safe. – April 14th trail design mini-charette The CV chapter of the VA ASLA is having an event to honor Olmstead. Local Landscape architects will be invited to sit down and draw stuff / brainstorm to resolve design challenges at the Pantops trails down behind State Farm. Jess will send details to the CTC when she gets them. – Jarman’s Gap road tree-planting/ Crozet Trails Day 2012 Jess will do pro bono streetscape tree design plan. VDOT has to approve but should be no contest. She spoke with the Lion’s Club (Phil and Carl will meet with Jess soon) and they want to get involved too, since they have a goal to plant 1000s this year. Plastic cylinders can encase small ones. Not shrubs; just trees to determine species and size and numbers. VDOTs project ends in Sept and we can start then and do it in conjunction with Crozet Trail Day in Oct. Keep the 5-K and do community tree-planting. The 5-K race will need a leader / organizer and Cville Running Co (the sales part is closing but not the race piece) is keen on working with a CTC person on this. Could do the Pedestrian Challenge in the Spring. Tree costs could encourage local biz to donate to purchases. Close the street and have street fair. Bio-filter will be completed before this. Scott will consider 5-K leadership. Other: – Bridge mural restoration- April (Linda) First week of April / Spring Break… CTC group thing or just individuals? – Mower/ trimmer (Bob) Can get one for $75 with raised wheels. Scott has a trimmer that needs refurbishing that we could use. – Bridge design standards/ ideas (DanM.) Dan has designs that he thinks would work that already have had blanket approval from Brd of Supervisors as long as the Co. engineer approves it.
Next workday: Saturday, March 24th to reroute trailhead at OT Drive and section between there and the Lindy Bane Bridge. DanM will send Josh Davis notice of this plan. Next Meeting: April 12th
