January 2013

CTC
January 10, 2013

-Introductions: Lots of newcomers and returnees: Jessica, Dan, Christine, Phil, Denise, Leslie C., Leslie B., Janet, Pat, Bob D., Bob S., Tom, Steve, Terri, Gene, Linda, John (Crozet Running Club). (Some heard about CTC by being invited by members, one couple saw our card in Anna’s, some via the 5K race, some via The Gazette survey and more recent articles.)

– 2012 goals recap and discussion: We did this in Nov but few attendees; so we will re-visit tonight.  Building: Lindy Bane re-route, upper Mint Springs re-route research, install amenities along the Henley Hornets trail, assist Western Ridge w/ their plank bridge, construct the Joseph Taylor bridge — some of these gaols will carry over, but lots has been done. Planning: Corey Farm: need a bridge and factor in corridor component, identify pedestrian bridge options, West Hall to Western Ridge has been fixed by WH development and re-zoning gift. Admininstration: Acquire mower, follow progress of WH, work w/ Henley shop class for a sign (Dan says there’s money for this); get Scouts and school groups involved.  Some of these not done, but we did things not on the list too—planted trees, hurricane recovery.

-2013 goals- Building, planning, and admin. : GOALS: We ran out of time (beyond what is below); so think about these, and then share them with Jessica via email, phone, or bring them to February 13 meeting. Suggest goals that interest YOU; that you’d like to work on.

-Building:
– New trails at Byrom: this Saturday we’ll work on completing the loop; meet at Greenhouse Coffee to leave at 9AM-1PM (or earlier if you need to leave), and Gators will haul us and tools up They have tools for us);  vertical park and trails;  connected to the AT and SNP.
            – Upper loop at Mint Springs? Working on it… later
–   Clean up the Henley Hornets Trail.  Need to work on it more w/ chain saw(s) + new sign (Dan). We have folks use their own saws and we need to keep those groups small. Purchase saw for the CTC? OK as long as users take a chain saw class. National Parks Service or Dept of Forestry. Phil has one he’ll donate. Dan spoke a little about liability—chain sawing is not covered. Linda can go back again after Jan 23rd; she and The Bobs will coordinate another half day.
–   From treasurer Nan, via Jessica: we need to comply with Crozet Parc’s 501(c) 3 status / rules = no money can be spent on party expenditures; we cannot advertise for other companies but sponsorship is OK because the businesses cannot expect a specific payback form the “advertising”. Separate account?
–   Musical instrument-making; on the trails.
–   Loop at Crozet Park needs a small bridge across creek (will be built by Scout younger brother of sign/kiosk -maker)
-Planning:
-Bridge north of WestHall: Dan said that this is a first quarter project so maybe in March; they gave the county $3K and it will cost significantly more than that, because we need to build it more broadly than we thought originally.
            – Bridge south of West Hall: between WH and Corey Farm we need to do the surveying and design etc.
            – Trail through Cory Farm parcel? See above.
–   Connection between West Hall and Crozet Park?  One of the developers told Dan he knew the Daleys and would call them; have yet to hear back from him. Need that piece and using the common space—Dan needs to continue going through the stages to get this done. Work has been done and more will be.
–   CTDay 2013 = 4th Annual.  5K run in AM and something else in the PM; but we know we can do the race alone so don’t have to be limited by anyone else’s schedules. Want to consider now doing the 5K race on the day of Arts&Crafts Day; some aren’t too keen on losing our identity under A&C Day auspices. Dan suggested we do it in conjunction w/ National Trails Day in June—more attention to the trail part than we do on an average workday; then 5K race at the Park on A&C Day and call it Run 4 Trails. (Need the 5K loop by October to even consider this.  Could get a one-day option from the Daley family for that day.)  That way, we work together as a community [we’re all under the same 501(c)3 umbrella], and that way we’d be planning and advertising with them; use of the YMCA.  Or we can do the CTDay in conjunction with VA Trails Day. We need to decide SOON, due to February advertising by A&C Day.

John Anderson from Crozet Running Club: Let’s work together, and develop events and organize future like Byrom to Jarman Gap connection etc.).  RE: Use Bad for the Bone for future 5K race; or use John’s group might be able to partner with us on that instead. They’re just getting started; but look forward to getting involved with us.

FINANCIAL REPORT: $3400; $292 spent on parties.

ACTION ITEMS:
– Check on kiosk and small bridge at Crozet Park loop (2 Scouts brothers).
– How should we (CTC reps, Gene and Bob) and County interact? Dan will attend one of their meetings and get this worked out.
–  Contact Daleys for one-day easement and let Leslie know ASAP about October A&C Day 5K.
